In the meantime, the sutures provide structure for collagen growth, encouraging the growth of collagen so that when the sutures dissolve, a network of collagen remains to give the skin structure. Studies show collagen begins to encapsulate the sutures at about 30 days after insertion. The suture may begin to absorb around 181 days after implantation, and after a year, the sutures may show degradation.
